WHAT IS SMA?
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic neuromuscular condition that causes the loss of motor neurons — the nerves that control essential muscle functions such as breathing, swallowing and movement. As these nerves deteriorate, muscles become progressively weaker and waste away.
SMA is the leading genetic cause of death in babies under two. Families across Victoria and Australia are affected by this devastating condition, yet greater awareness and support are still needed.
